Default Build 5536 has become unstable

Tom,

Athlon64 X2 is a CPU, and has nothing to do with Windows X64. The Athlon64
X2 CPU is capable of running both X86 and X64 versions of Vista. I am
running X86 versions of both Vista and Windows XP.

Currently build 5536 is for x86 only and may cause x64 systems to crash.

I have a dual-boot system. The XP Professional image has been running
stable for months. I have been running a stable pre-5536 Vista image in
the other partition since the first beta 2. Recently, I made two changes:

- Upgraded the CPU from an Athlon64 3200+ to an Athlon64 X2 4200+
- Wiped the Vista image and performed a clean install of build 5536.

Now I am experiencing the following problem:

- When the installation performs the system rating immediately before
displaying the desktop, the system crashes and reboots.
- I am then able to establish a user ID and the desktop is displayed.
- When I click on Personalize and select Screensaver, the system freezes
(need to depress Reset to reboot)
- When I try and re-run the system rating, the system freezes.

I have tried the following:

- Ran the memory test, which showed no errors.
- Lowered the memory timings to very conservative values (the system is
not over clocked), no change
- Re-installed Vista several times, with same results.

System freezes are often attributable to memory problems. The freezes
occurring on the screen saver and the system rating might indicate a
video driver issue.

Anyone having similar issues, or anyone have a suggestion? The XP image
on the same hardware continues to be rock solid.

My equipment:

- MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum - BIOS 1C0
- Athlon 64 X2 4200+ socket 939
- Corsair XMS DDR3200 memory (2x512MB) dual channel
- MSI Geforce 6600GT video AGP 128MB
- Single ATA hard drive

Thanks,
Jerry

This does sound like a video driver issue. Bug it and send it to microsoft
.... make sure you tell it to send your event log and directx diagnostic
files.

Try installing the video driver for Windows Vista available on nvidia's
website, as it is an older driver than the one included with 5536.
