Typically we have seen this because of GRE drop if firewall is off. If that
is not the case then please provide the RAS LOGd to figure out the actual
issue. To turn on the logs, do the following...

1) netsh ras set trac * en
Make the attempt
2) netsh ras set trac * dis

send the files undr %windows%/tracing direcotry

I'm having the same problem. Windows Firewall is disabled, but I still can't
connect using VPN on my Vista machine, altough my supervisor with an
identical laptop can. Error 800 is listed in the applications log. I enabled
the RAS logs, but the only log with any entries is rasman.log. It references
an error 600, which I looked up, but it just says vpn is waiting for a
process or something to that efect. I don't have OneCare installed.

I forgot to add that when I try to ping the vpn server, even when connected
directly to the network, I get a "general failure."

Hi Jim,
Error 600 in rasman is actually *not* an error - it means that the calls
is not done yet ('The operation is pending'). This is expected during the
connection phase when device is in 'connecting' state.

You mentioned that even a simple ping to the vpn server is failing with
'general failure'. Can you check (with ipconfig /all) if you are getting a
proper IpAddress. If not, you need to work with your local administrator to
get a proper IpAddress before making a VPN connection.

Hope it helps,

Thanks,
Dinesh.

OK - I'm sending you the files under the 'tracing' directory.

My IP address and other information is correct, and I have access to all
network resources. I can use remote desktop to connect to our VPN server,
but when I try to connect using VPN (either when connected to our network or
from home/away) it fails.

I just tried to send you the contents of the tracing folder, but I got an
"undeliverable" error.

Jim - I'm having the same problem. My error 800 comes up almost immedately
and I'm reasonably certain that no traffic is even leaving my machine. Our
office firewall is ISA Server 2004 SP3 and I'm running Vista Ultimate. It
was working fine just 2 weeks ago.
