Default Can't Share The Windows Vista C Drive - Why?

Folks,

I have finally got my two Windows XP PCs and my new Windows Vista PC to
network just fine. Sharing amongst the PCs is working well. However, there
is one annoyance. I have set my Window Vista PC’s C Drive to advance sharing
and it appears to accept this. However, when I attempt to access the C-drive
share from my WXP machines, it states I don't have permission to bring it up,
etc. I did the same advanced share process on an external hard drive
(Iomega) attached to the Vista PC and at the Windows XP PCs, it comes up just
fine for viewing and manipulation. What am I missing here? Permissions have
been granted to be full for that C-Drive. Any help would be appreciated.

What are the Folder permissions on the C drive set to? You can find this by
doing the following:

1. Open Computer
2. Right click on the shared drive and select properties from the context
menu
3. Select the Security Tab in the displayed properties sheet.

The permissions on a file share are actually the combination of the Share
Permissions (set when creating the share) and the folder permissions. When
the Advanced Sharing option is used, only the share permissions are set, and
when the "Network File and Folder Sharing" option is used both are set
correctly.

The reason that it doesn't work only on the Vista drive is that Vista has
restricted the permissions on the drive in order to make it more secure. On
XP machines the everyone group had permissions on the drive by default in
Vista it doesn't and Users are only given read permissions for most of the
operating system drive including the root of the drive.

If you are not using passwords when sharing files, you need to give the
everyone group permissions on the folders of the drive that you want to be
able to access from the share. Be careful when doing this since this will
give anyone on your network the ability to access the share in this manner.

I hope that this helps.

Thanks,
Mike

Thanks for the help....should have said so a looong time ago, sorry.

But recently my little home network went down. There was a large storm
comming into my area and so I decided to not only power off one of the
pc's but unplug it from the wall outlet as well. The PC in question was
the one that had my router and cable modem attached to it.
When I powered and booted up again....lost all of the home network
connectivity....none of the PC's could see each other and the one I
unplugged had no internet connectivity either, it was dead in the water.

A "Friend" came by and after much shouting and bickering he said the
nic card and the router was DOA.

I found it very hard to believe both died at the same time expecially
when the Vista machine could access the internet.

Tried resetting the router several times....(Lights on it never went
"amber" when depressing the button in back of router) and this just
confirmend his argument that "the router must be dead" Now the XP
machine had no internet or network connection at all.

We tried to install the router again using the CD but it would never
get past the screen where it checks the router. (again...."see see the
router is dead")

Finally I checked the power connection to the APC power back up and it
seemed secure but I unplugged it and blew off the dust from the unit
then plugged it back in.....***Ding Ding Ding**
He shouts from the other room that the setup now sees the router....and
goes to the next step to set it up again.

Sooo after all is said and done the 2 pc's the Vista Home and the
windows XP can see each other but ....wait for it .....-*Can't access
the base C drive of the Vista PC again.*-

I tried the security settings and other stuff but no joy....finally did
a Google search and I find I asked this a while back....hummm....what am
I missing here..I see the Admin group ....Users group ......

Then it hits me .....where's the everyone group?
If you are not using passwords when sharing files, you need to give the
*everyone group* permissions on the folders of the drive that you want
to be able to access from the share

Added the Everyone Group and it just has read rights....so checked the
change and Full control ....click apply ...POP UP Warning!
Something about things might not work right or permissions
rights....clicked OK then it starts filtering through all the folders
but stops and fails on Program Files(x86) and Program Files....also
Windows folder and some specific files on the C drive....but everything
else gets done.

Life is good again....it's just Vista making it a little more difficult
then it should.....

I am soo glad this is still here and I hope this helps other people.
