Vista Premium - can't ping or see local machines
Hi,
I just got Vista Premium installed, and I can't see or ping any local computers. I can ping and access external systems (e.g., using IE). I've enabled NetBIOS over TCP, set fixed IP, DNS, and Gateway, and also disabled the firewall, but still have the problem. I don't know if this is the problem, but I was looking at the routing table (route print), and it looks (the metric) strange: C:\Windows\system32route print ================================================== ========================= Interface List 8 ...00 03 ff 04 32 79 ...... Well, I was just able to get ping to local computers working, by changing gateway in the route for 192.168.0.0 from "On-link" to 192.168.0.1 using the "route change" command. I can now ping local computers as well the on the internet, and I can ping the Vista machine from other computers on my network. However, I still can't "see" other computers from the Vista machine and "net view" still yields an error 6118 (can't list). This is getting stranger by the minute  ...Since, after changing the route table, I can ping other machines, I tried accessing another machine's shares using it's IP address, e.g.: Instead of \\testwin2k\e I used: \\192.168.0.252\e and, that WORKED? net view \\192.168.0.252 also works. I still can't see any machines in "Network", though .Does anyone know how I can get this all working? Also, how come I had to change the route table, and how can I configure things so that I don't have to do that? In network center do you have the network type set to private?

Thanks for responding. The answer is "yes" to both of your suggestions. Network type is set to "private", and network discovery is turned on. The puzzling thing is that, with all the things that I've tried, I've *occasionally* been able to get other computers to appear, but then they're gone after reboot. I have a feeling that part of the problem is that in the Properties for the "Client for Microsoft Networks", under "RPC Service", when I try to set that to "Windows Locater", that setting is not "sticking", i.e., when I go ack in to look at the setting, it's set to blank again. The reason for this suspicion is I think that was one of the things that I've been messing with. Again, I can access shares on other machines using "\\ipaddress", but I just can't seem to get Vista to get a list of other machines. I tried browstat from the MS resource toolkit, and when I run "browstat getmaster 1 misnet", I get: Run on Vista1 machine: Master Browser: VISTA1 Run on other machines: Master Browser: TESTWIN2K So, it seems like the Vista machine thinks that it's the browser master.
