Default DVD/CD Burner Driver Issues

I installed Vista without a hitch. Yeah, there a couple of minor issues that
I can deal with until new drivers come out...with the exception of one thing.
Vista no longer recognizes my Plextor DVD Burner nor my Backup Sony CDR
Burner. Nothing wrong with them, the BIOS has no problems and the Device
Manager list them properly. I've tried uninstalling the drivers and reboot
but Vista always fails when it tries to update or reinstall. Hmm, had no
problem for a few days, then one day, they're gone. What now? I've checked
Windows Update...nothing there. I can't install the Plextor drivers since it
doesn't recognize my burner and the Sony CD won't work, cause the drive isn't
there. I can't reinstall without the drives working. I'm at a loss and am
in desperate mode. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Default DVD/CD Burner Driver Issues

I think this Vista DVD drive recognizing problem may be quite common. See a
few
postings above /later. I have the same problem. The drives were there then
disappear then reappear when I reboot. Do you by any chance have a ASUS P5W
DH motherboard.
Also on the web at other places I see people have DVD recognition problems
with Vista.
Anybody got a suggestion

I got a similar problem!

After installing some windows vista updates, all my cd-rom devices are
disappeared!
i get the code 39 problem in hardware manager.
(can't load driver or driver corrupt, or driver deleted)
I even tried my extern multi-burner.... but it doesnt work!
-- all code 39 problem
So I checked the driver in my windows32 folder... no changes have been made!

shut down/ restarting... affects NO changes...

I solved my problem!

Somehow my registry was eddited with a filter!
I had no upper filter... but i had a lower filter inserted by some kind of
reason!
just delated it!
I followed these instructions:
http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/com...130426&m=1&p=1
the part of "Carey Frisch [MVP]"!

now also my extern multi-dvd-writer is working fine again!!

Thanks everyone, looking at the posts, I can now see this is a Vista issue.
Just for clarity sake, My motherboard is a Asus K8N 32 Deluxe, AMD Athlon 64
Processor 4000+ 2.41 ghz, Plextor DVDR PX 716al + Sony CRX320EE, 2 gig Memory
& Creative Audigy Z2S, which no longer works as of this morning!!!

I can't reinstall XP without my drives and I'm moving beyond frustrated to
flat out ****ed!

Can somebody explain what this registry "filter" is. What values should be
there.

Okay,

First click on "Start" then "Run". Type "Regedit" and click "OK". You will
be taken into your system Registry. The proceed to got to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}.
Once there, on the right hand side you will see "Upper Filters" and "Lower
Filters". Delete These and reboot your system. Once rebooted, you'll see
that your burners have returned. These filters are generally placed there by
your burning software such as Nero or whatever you use. The software will
still function without the filters.

Hope this helps.

One last thing, before deleting the filters, make sure you save a copy of
the registry (in your documents) just in case something goes wrong. If you
follow these steps, it shouldn't.

Thanks whiwo, I fould only a "LowerFilters" there. I deleted that and the
drives are there. Since the problem was random will wait a while to be sure
it solved the problem.
Any idea what the software uses these entries for?
