I have a vista home premium based pc (wired)networked to my partners
prehistoric windows 98 pc, when i had xp pro all was good we could both access each other shared folders etc. Now all she can do is browse the web and check her mail, if she tries to access any of my shares it asks for a password?? I never set one up so is there a default one ? My xbox is also wired to my pc and has the same problem. I can browse her files etc what am i missing? Please help this really frustrating. Steve,
By default, Vista requires an username/password to access file shares. Can you please check out 'Password Protected Sharing' and 'Sharing a Folder or Printer in Windows Vista' sections in http://www.microsoft.com/technet/net...vista_fp.mspx? Thanks, Sen. Steve,
It is easier to diagnose the issue if we settle on either password-less file sharing or password protected sharing. Please choose one and let me know. Also, please provide the following information: 1. Which folder are you trying to share? (Ex: C:\users\abby\pictures or D:\backup or D: ) 2. Open a command prompt and get the output of 'icacls folder-you-are-trying to share'. Ex: If you are trying to share C:\backup, then get the output of 'icacls C:\backup' How to open a command prompt? Start - All Programs - Accessories - 'command prompt' 3. Do you have any 3rd party firewall installed on Vista or 98? (Ex: OneCare or Mcafee) Thanks.
