Default Vista wired networking

I have a vista home premium based pc (wired)networked to my partners
prehistoric windows 98 pc, when i had xp pro all was good we could both
access each other shared folders etc. Now all she can do is browse the web
and check her mail, if she tries to access any of my shares it asks for a
password?? I never set one up so is there a default one ? My xbox is also
wired to my pc and has the same problem. I can browse her files etc what am i
missing? Please help this really frustrating.
Cheers
Steve

Steve,
By default, Vista requires an username/password to access file shares. Can
you please check out 'Password Protected Sharing' and 'Sharing a Folder or
Printer in Windows Vista' sections in
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/net...vista_fp.mspx?

Thanks,
Sen.

Hi Steve

i had over 6 hours with micrsoft tec dep. re this
except you win 98 was XP here

i will try a few things i remember

1] control panel
2]network and sharing

now from top

a] network
b] to the right customise

set to private

Sharing and Discovery

network discovery ON
file sharing ON
public folder sharing ON
printer sharing OFF [this is maybe local as mine is wired to router]
password protected sharing OFF
Media sharing ON

Now i also had third party firewall/antivirus/antispyware

this entire programme had to be not just disabled but
completaly removed from hard drive apparently disabling firewalls
does not turn them off from running in the background according to M/soft

i have since installed microsoft liveonecare for 90 day free trial
if you take this route you will need to change one default setting
in programme

on left of window select change settings

then

select firewall tab[window]

then firewall connection tool

place a tick in box for ---- file and printer sharing

remainder of boxes i have no!!tick

hope this has gone some way to help

cheers for now

Steve,
It is easier to diagnose the issue if we settle on either password-less file
sharing or password protected sharing. Please choose one and let me know.
Also, please provide the following information:

1. Which folder are you trying to share? (Ex: C:\users\abby\pictures or
D:\backup or D: )
2. Open a command prompt and get the output of 'icacls
folder-you-are-trying to share'. Ex: If you are trying to share C:\backup,
then get the output of 'icacls C:\backup'
How to open a command prompt? Start - All Programs - Accessories -
'command prompt'
3. Do you have any 3rd party firewall installed on Vista or 98? (Ex: OneCare
or Mcafee)

Thanks.
