Default My desktop is in all wingdings and symbols

I shut down my notebook one night and when i turned it on the next morning my
entire desktop and some other programs on my computer where entirely in
wingdings and other symbols for all the words. I have found out this was not
a prank and i was told by a computer support group that i may need to
uninstall Vista completely. Has anyone else had this problem or is anyone
aware of a way to fix this because it is very annoying.
