Hi. I have a network at home with 3 XP machines. I recently reloaded
one of those machines with Windows Vista Ultimate x32 (NOT an
upgrade). I can also dual-boot this Vista/XP machine (each OS is on a
separate drive)

Before the upgrade, I was accessing the "Xp/Vista" machine's E$ admin
share from an XP Windows Media center machine in another room to get
at DVD images (VOBs, IFO's, etc...each dir is what you'd find in the
video_ts dir of a dvd). This always worked fine when everything was
XP. The E$ share is on a drive that is separate from the 2 operating
systems.

When I bring the XP/Vista machine up in Vista, the XP MCE 2005 machine
can still acess the E$ admin share and I can see the folders of DVD
images.

The problem: Approximately 5 minutes into playing a DVD image over
that share, the MCE machine completely freezes and only a power-cycle
can get me out of it. I tried playing the files in Windows Media
Player and got the same results. I also have a laptop with XP MCE
2005... Same result!

If I boot the Xp/Vista machine back to XP again, all is fine!

I've poked around on the net to no avail so far, trying things like:
- Updating the vista network driver
- I have the latest XP drivers on all machines
- Creating an "everyone full control" share on the vista machine and
accessing the files that way
- Changing a local network security policy on Vista to do NTLM2 and
NTLM
(http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/ShowPost.aspx?
PostID=1037989&SiteID=17)
- Changing both/either machines' network adapters to do full flow
control
- Changing both/either machines to 100mbps full duplex (instead of
auto)
- None of the machines are wireless, they are all hardwired.

Does anyone have any clue what could be causing this? It's making me
nuts! :-)

They must all be in the same Workgroup because you say they can all see each
other... but on the Vista PC, you did set it as a Private Network, right?
If you want the XP PCs to have access to the Vista PC, set it to Password
Protected Sharing... OFF. Everything else (at least on my own PC network)
is set to ON. 6 PCs, 2 adults and 3 cats... so I'm not too worried about
'everyone' having access.

If it happens on more than one PC, I'd suspect the router.

Sorry for the vastly late reply, but I'm still have the same issue, and
here's the thing:

If the problem were the router, then I would expect that I would always have
a problem. The fact is that I only experience a problem when the "XP/Vista"
machine is running Vista. When it's booted up in XP everything is fine.
I've had a month to further see this, and it NEVER crashes or freezes when XP
is running, just Vista.

I've got all of the latest drivers I can get for Vista, but still no use.

although I'm using Sage, not MCE, but a very similar problem. If you
have not solved it, you may want to try disabling TCP Scaling (you can
do this with the netsh command). I've read of other people on the Sage
forums doing this and it worked for them. Unfortunately, it has not
helped me. I'm anxious to know if you've found a solution.

Jim, thanks for your reply... Unfortunately, I never solved that problem, but
I will definitely give the TCP Scaling a shot. I've pretty much given up on
vista because of this problem, if this fixes it i'd be a happy camper.

So, I got home tonight, applied the change to disable TCP scaling, and nope,
same problem. :-( Playing a movie for 10 minutes or results in it just
locking up.... GRRRRR....

I think I might go get a new router and see if that helps. I kinda like
Vista after booting back into it here... This network problem is the ONLY
issue I have.

I think I finally solved my problem. Video has been playing for nearly 1
hour with no freeze!!

How did I do it? I bought a new router! Man! I had a Dlink DI-624 Rev c.
I know a few people who had this same model and for some it worked ok, and
others it was AWFUL. I just bought a Netgear (which I've also installed for
people who had problems with their DI-624s)... New router is a WGT624 v3 ...

I'd be curious to know what your router currently is, and if replacing it
helps? You sound like you're in the same boat I was.
