My problem is rather strange~
I have a laptop (Vista) in the domitory, and a workstation (XP Pro), a
server (W2K) in the lab.
They all belong to a private network like 10.x.x.x, but across some switches
(in different subnet).

The symptom is as following (I always use \\ip\folder to access shared
folder):
1) Plug my laptop (Vista) in the domitory, access other computers (XP Pro)
in the domitory (in the same subnet), it's okay, and the reverse access is
also okay.
2) Plug my laptop (Vista) in the domitory, access the workstation (XP Pro)
in the lab, failed, saying "Windows cannot find '\\10.11.3.226', check the
spelling and try again". The reverse access is also failed.
3) Use another computer (XP Pro) in the domitory to access the workstation,
it's okay, and the reverse access is also okay.
4) Plug my laptop (Vista) in the domitory, access the server (W2K) in the
lab, it assumes to log in with guest, and no prompt to enter username and
password.
5) Use another computer (XP Pro) in the domitory to access the server (W2K)
in the lab, it prompt to enter username and password, after that, successful
log in.
6) Plug my laptop (Vista) in the lab, access the workstation (XP Pro) and
the server (W2K), they're both okay.

Is it clear? (I'm not a native English speaker :-P)

My suspicion is that you have a problem with the netmask setting on your
laptop.

On the xp pro in the dorm that can see the lab, and on your laptop when in
the dorm,
execute the command program 'ipconfig /all', compare the two, checking esp
for the netmask value.

The netmask value SHOULD have come from the DHCP server unless you have
disabled DHCP use in the laptop.

However, I don't think netmask is the problem ~ i can ping the computer in
the lab from my laptop, and others service is all okay (remote desktop, http,
ftp).

Note sympton 4&5, both laptop (vista) and other xp computer in dorm can
access to the shared folder on the w2k server in the lab, the difference is
on xp it prompts to logon while on vista it does not and assume to logon as
guest.

agree, if there was a netmask problem then would show in ping problems also,

FYI, there is the concept of network location, the computer will behave
differently depending on which network it is connected to. On the XP see
'network location' in help and support. (it is also in XP but I don't recal
if its help is of any help.)

It is possible that the permissions are set differently for the 'lab'
location vs the 'dorm' location.

A 'private' network has full permissions on the network, a 'public' network
has restricted connections.

Yes, i know the feature of 'net location', and i tried tuning on it too, but
no good news :-(
