Default Why won't they share?

Hello,

The situation is that one computer has Windows 2000 and one has Windows
Vista. They can share the internet and can supposedly see each other but
there is no file sharing.

Is it simply because they have such different OS or is this something else?

Although obviously both machines run different operating systems, this
is not the reason your file/printer sharing isn't working. You've done
something incorrectly.

Create identical user accounts and passwords on both machines. Make sure
both machines are in the same Workgroup. Make sure all firewalls are
configured to allow the local area network as trusted.

Refer to this webpage for the exact settings you need on Vista:
