Default Icon has changed without any action by me

I had created a link for my dial-up (DSL) onto the desktop. It appeared a
nice icon with 2 blue screens and a little device (a modem?).

After a couple of system starts, that icon changed to a different one, seems
like the notepad icon or so.

I have searched several sources (system files) for the original icon -
couldn't find it.

Okay, it's not so important, which icon. But I put the question he why
has this change occured?

Thanks in advance

No ideas about why the icon changed, unless the icon that was being used was
either deleted or moved, somehow.

Youn can get that icon, or something similar back by right clicking that
shorcut and selecting the Shortcut Tab. Click the Change Icon button and
select one from that group.

Sure, that's what I did already, and not only in the there offered source,
but also in some more system-related icon sources. Nowhere the original icon
was found.
But that's not the reason for my response: meanwhile I have deleted the
dial-up and the icon, have created everything new and then I had my original
icon back.

What a pleasure!

But not for long: meanwhile the icon has changed again.
There must be a system-relevant reason.

Try this. Go through the pain of recreating the icon again (deleting, etc),
and when the new icon appears as it should, right-click on it and choose
change Icon, if its a normal shortcut (with an arrow overlay), and take note
of where the icon is. (You don't need to actually change it, of course, so
click on Cancel after writing down or memorizing the icon's file and path -
it should automatically be highlighted, showing the path name and file). If
it should change again over time, at least you can change it back to the
original icon, now that you know where the file is at, using the "change
icon" method.

I have had this problem also with one icon, but haven't figured out yet what
caused it to change. I just kept resetting it, and, for a long time now, it
hasn't changed.

The idea sounds good - but unfortunately I can't try it. In spite of
deleting and creating new - I don't get the original icon any more.
Well, I'm sure the next reinstallation of Vista will be due soon, and then
I'll try your way.
Thank you anyway
