Default VISTA - RAM

Can anyone tell my why Vista only recognizes 2 gig of RAM, even when I have
4 gig installed?
My BIOS sees 4 gig. I may not be the smartest person in the world, but why
would a MB manufacture sell a MB that supports up to 8 gig ram, when the OS
only sees 2 gig?

Any help or explanation will be appreciated.

expected.
