I have been doing file (not completepc) backups successfully, but suddenly
they started consitently failing with the error File backup failed. The error is: The system cannot find the path specified. (0x80070003). There's no indication of what path is missing. It seems to get through the "preparing files" phase, but then nothing is created on the backup harddrive. It seems to be functioning normally, though. |

See if it gives a fuller explanation in the Event Log - type Event Viewer in
help if you don't know how to start it. Is your backup target present during the backup? Is it possible that the
drive is turned off or unplugged? -- This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights. Want to learn more about Windows file and storage technologies? Thanks the response.
Well, yes, I did think of that, and it was running. I finally reformatted the drive and started over, after which things started working again. I'm sure it was, in fact, operator error. I had been changing some security attributes on files on that device and must have inadvertently touched something critical to the backup process. So I have only myself to blame. I'd still suggest, though, if you want to really make this brain dead simple--which is a good goal--put out useful error messages. (At LEAST in the event log.) What good is "path not found"? Which path? Was it really "path not found" or "access denied"? "Jill Zoeller [MSFT]" wrote: Is your backup target present during the backup? I agree with you about the error messages, believe me! What I've been
relying on is the error code...but this is of course no help to customers unless you are searching and manage to find a hit from a previous report. I will be sure to bring this up with the Backup team. Glad to hear it's working for you. -- This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights.
