Default adjusting monitor brightness

i have gateway ml3706 laptop and the screen is too bright. i dont know how to
adjust its brightness and i have been searching on line and cant figure out.
please help me

Not specific to your Gateway model (Toshiba,Dell) : Look for keys on
the Keyboard with a different color markings than the normal letters
that look like a "Sun" ( a "O" with fuzz, and the "O" without fuzz ).
Hold down the "Fn" key (same color marking, but on top, usually near
the space bar)) and tap the non-fuzzy "sun" key.

According to Gateway it's adjustable using the up and down arrows on your
keyboard.
