Partition Magic Ver8 and Vista's NTFS
Hi all,
I have a Toshiba A135-S4427 Notebook that came preinstalled with Vista Home Premium. I want to use Partition Magic ver-8 to repartition the HDD into 3 total partitions, in other words - I want to creat 2 additional partitions. I read on another board the following: ....Vista has a different NTFS than XP. It is a known issue that formatting a drive/partition with Vista installed with a 3rd-party partitioning application will be sure to create problems, again due to the different NTFS format, since there are currently no compatible partitioning applications out that work with Vista. If I can get Partition Magic 8 to JUST create the partitions but NOT format them, will Vista's disk management format them correctly to the right NTFS for Vista? Thanks a bunch. Cin |

...there are currently no compatible partitioning applications out that work with Vista. No longer true. The latest Acronis Disk Director (build 2160) is Vista aware. If your Vista was pre-installed it probably takes up the whole disk. If true, you will need to shrink one (or more) partitions to make room, and there's the rub. I wouldn't be willing to trust an older app to do the resizing of Vista's partition(s). I would trust the latest DD from Acronis, however. |

So, use Vista tools. Boot to install DVD, select Repair, Command Prompt,
then run diskpart.exe. You can there create, format, shrink and expand partitions (with some restrictions, of course, because it's simple tool without GUI). -- M. You can also use Computer Management MMC in Vista to shrink partitions and
create unallocated disk space. From that you can create new partitions. Check out the help topic "Can I repartition my hard disk?" in Help and Support, or online at http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Win...4f4cc1033.mspx Please let us know if that resolves your issue, thanks. -- Andy Sweet Windows User Assistance team Microsoft Corporation "Michal Kawecki" wrote in message ... I have a related issue:
I am trying to shrink my C: partition (from 55GB to 30GB) in order to create a new partition. The message says there is 0 available space. I have disabled system restore, and moved the pagefile to a different partition, but no effect. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Interesting - one of my customers have exactly the same problem. And
diskpart.exe show _very_ confusing informations about free space on partitions... -- M. The built-in shrink utility will be able to decrease the partition size till
it bumps against the first unmovable/locked system file. If you want to decrease the partition further you will need a 3rd party Disk Management tool. I use Acronis Disk Director suite. The latest posted version is 100% Vista compatible. After installing the program, create the emergency CD. Reboot the computer and boot up with this CD. Do your partition work from there. You will not be hampered with locked files. -- Regards, Richard Urban MVP Microsoft Windows Shell/User "Elai" wrote in message ...
