Default Question about disk space

I just got window vista with my new laptop. However, I found out that I'm
using way more disk space than the software says it would.
I've installed a 2GB software on my window xp and it's fine, but when I
install it on my vista, 4.2 GB of space is used instead. I tried uninstalling
the software, but it only gave me 1.4GB of space left. When I install it
again, I lost another 4.2 GB, so it adds up to about 7GB for a 2GB program.
Is window doing something that I don't know about? If so, how can I free up
some space?
Would much appreciate if I can get any help, since I am absolutely clueless
right now. Thanks

You could reduce the amount of space allocated to System Restore. Have a look
here
