Hi,
I succeeded to set up a local network via a wireless connection between a labtop (Vista) and a PC (ME) Both PC´s sees each other, and Vista tot ME is working perfectly When trying to access the Vista PC on the ME i have to give a networkpassword? It is for sure not the one of the administrator..... Any advice? Regards Huib |

no, if you setup the same username and password on the both computers.

Hi,
Both PC are using the same username and password. Or do you mean that this is incorrect? It is for sure not the one of the administrator..... Any advice? Regards Huib I recently spoke with some networking people at Microsoft. As I understand it, Microsoft doesn't support Vista sharing its folders over a network with computers running Windows 95/98/Me. The prompt for the IPC$ network password is caused by incompatible network authentication protocols. Windows 95/98/Me can only use LM and NTLM authentication. By default, Vista only uses NTLMv2 authentication. This problem can be solved, as I describe below. However, after doing that, there are other problems: 1. Incomplete enumeration of shares. 95/98/Me only see some of Vista's shared folders, and the names of some shared folders are truncated, making them inaccessible. 2. Instability. Accessing Vista's shared folders can make 95/98/Me hang or crash. I'd love to know if anyone has found solutions to those problems. Until they're solved, I recommend not trying to access Vista's shared folders from 95/98/Me. If you want to do so, at your own risk, make a restore point on Vista and back up your important data on all computers first. Here's how to configure Vista to use LM and NTLM authentication and allow access from 95/98/Me. I'd like to thank Evan Pearce, who helped me understand and test this: 1. Click the Start button, type "regedit" in the Start Search box, and press Enter. 2. Click "Continue" in the User Account Control prompt. 3. Open this registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Lsa 4. If they don't already exist, create DWORD values named LmCompatibilityLevel and NoLmHash. 5. Set LMCompatibilityLevel to 1. 6. Set NoLmHash to 0. 7. Restart the Vista computer. 8. Go to Control Panel User Accounts, click "Change your password", enter your current password in the boxes for "Current password", "New password", and "Confirm new password", and click "Change password". -- Best Wishes, Steve Winograd, MS-MVP (Windows Networking) Please post any reply as a follow-up message in the news group for everyone to see.
