Default Home Premium: no connection to Exchange?

Hi everyone,

This is a question about Outlook and Exchange, but since I think it might be
caused by the limited network options in Home Premium I am also posting it
here.

I bought a new notebook that has Windows Vista Home Premium pre-installed. I
downloaded the trial version of Office 2007 with BCM and installed it.
Now it seems I can't connect to the Exchange 2003 mailbox on the Windows
Server 2003. I get two different messages, one stating that the server cannot
be connected (can only click ok) and that the server is unavailble, the
latter with the usual options to work offline, retry or cancel. Working
offline is, of course, not possible, since I wasn't able to connect for a
first time, so there are no offline folders yet.
It all worked fine on my old notebook that is running the RC of Windows
Vista Ultimate and the B2TR of Office 2007.
It even worked smoothly with RPC over HTTP!

I now suspect that it might be the limited network capabilities of Home
Premium that is in the way. Can someone confirm, before I run off to buy the
Ultimate version (which is the only upgrade option for Home Premium!)?
Please note that I *can* connect to the domain, so it seems, since I can log
on to the server and use all the shares there.
I used the manual configuration options, and copied all the settings from
the old notebook. I am baffled.

TIA,
Marcel

I would think that it would be that the Home version wouldn't work. It won't
(shouldn't) work in a domain, which Exchange requires.

I am not sure how you can connect to the domain (are you logging on to the
domain, or just accessing shares), though. Are you able to connect to
Exchange via HTTP like you were with Ultimate?

I think that I must be logging to the shares only. Although I connected to
the 'workgroup' with the same name as the domain.
No I also can't connect through http, so it must be the domain issue. Thnx!
/runs off to the store to get Ultimate. snif.

MarcelD,

I'm sorry you're experiencing trouble. It's true that in order to join a
domain you need Vista Business, Enterprise, or Ultimate. Did you know that
you can now buy and download Vista versions at
http://www.windowsmarketplace.com/co....mc_id=0207_08

Thnx for your concern, Kim. For obvious reasons, I bought an oem version of
Ultimate already. :-) 64-bit no less, only to run into the next problem, how
to get 64-bit drivers for some of the hardware... duh.
