Networking with XP Desktop

I'm trying to set up my home network so the notebook can acces the hard drive and the printer attached to the desktop. I've shared the C drive and printer on the destop. Both the desktop and the notebook have the same workgroup name, but I still can't find the destop from the notebook. I've heard this may be a firewall issue. Any suggestions? Thanks
