I have Vista business installed on a domain laptop. When on the road, i
often VPN into the office to connect to project files, etc. When i setup the
VPN on vista, i can get the vpn to connect, my outlook can see the exchange
server, i can ping all of our servers, and network center finds all of the
computers. But I cannot access any network shares. After several attempts
at troubleshooting I find that when I ipconfig, all of my IP address are
correct, but the vpn miniport has the wrong subnet mask. instead of getting
255.255.255.0 I get 255.255.255.255.

I have tried deleting and recreating the VPN connection but no luck. My
computer can see the DNS/DHCP server, but for some reason i get the wrong
subnet mask. is this a known issue? Is there a fix for this?

The Vista subnet mask 255.255.255.255 is by design. It could be the permission issue since you can ping. To confirm it, using net use \\remotepcipaddress. You my receive system error 5.

OK, here is an update. I realized that the subnet mask was fine when i VPNd
from another machine through the same connection that I used with the laptop.
But here is some more info:

On the laptop, when i vpn in, I can ping all computers on the office
network, I can remote desktop into any server/ workstation on the office
network. But i cannot access ANY network shares through mapped drives OR
through UNC navigation. I get an error that my credentials could not be
verified through a DNS server. But I can ping and RD into our domain
controller (which is the DNS server). I do not have WINS installed on the
DC. But I do have IPv6 installed on the DC.

So what is this permissions issue? Is this on the link that is in your
response?
