Default Submission to newsgroups never appear.

I have always been able to submit to the subscribed newsgroups from this
Windows XP SP2 machine. I have submitted two questions regarding my Vista
Ultimate system and they never show up on the newsgroup.

The first is that, no matter how I try to use the backup program on the
Windows Vista machine to a Shared disk and shared folder on my Windows XP
machine, a user name and password are requested.

The second, probably similar, I cannot print to a printer on that Windows XP
machine. For the simple exercise, I type some gibberish into a Notepad
document and then Ctrl+P. The Print dialog box come up without the printer
showing, so I click Add Printer, then the dialog box appears showing the
three computers currently on the network, I double click on the XP computer
icon and the printer icon appears. I select the icon and click on the Select
button and receive the message: "Windows cannot connect to the printer.
Access is denied."

Hope this appears and I can get this resolved.

Thanks

Hi Chuck. At least this message came through. Not sure what happened with
the others you sent.

Please give this article a read-through. It should help with the network
sharing issues you describe.

The MS news/web based news servers had some issues over the weekend. Many
posts made to the web based groups did not make to these NNTP news groups
and vice versa. I had a bunch of replies magically appear yesterday. I
believe the problems have now been fixed, at least as far as I can tell...

The first, with regard to the backup program, is the way it's supposed to
be. Since backup is automated, you won't always be there to type in your
username and password; it needs to store the credentials used to access the
backup location so it can run when no one is logged in. (Storing backups to
a location that doesn't authenticate users, e.g. to an XP Home share or an
XP Pro share configured with Simple File Sharing is not supported, as that
is insecure.)

For the second, it sounds like a credentials issue again -- check whether
you can browse to the printer via Start Network; if so, try to add it.
See if you can access file shares on that XP machine. These should help
narrow down where the problem is.

Gloria,

Great article. Unfortunately, it is all Vista. My problem is connecting FROM
Vista TO Windows XP Pro. I cannot access the printer on the XP machine, I
cannot back up to the drive on the XP machine. I can see the printer on the
Network from the Vista machine, with the little twins showing that it is
shared. I can even open it and see that there are no documents in the queue.
I just can't print to it.

I have placed a Word document on the XP drive where I want to place the
backup file. I can open that document using Word on the Vista machine.

All are WORKGROUP.

Michael,

Thanks for the comments. I wonder what is more "insecure" than not backing
up data to an external device, whether a USB drive or a second computer. I
can access files on the Windows XP computer and open them on the Vista
Computer.

At this juncture, I am going to install a PCI parallel printer port on the
Vista machine and hopefully, I can print to it from the XP Pro machine.

I have been following the postings of Printer problems with Vista and have
tried everything I can understand but still cannot print to my HP Photosmart
2710 all-in-one. It shows up on my printer list as the selected default
printer but I can't print to it. My system is a new Dell Kimension E520 with
Vista. Any suggestions?
