Not connecting to web sites
Hi very much a newbie here and would welcome your advice on a very puzzling vista problem. My new laptop (toshiba satellite P105-S6147) using vista home premium downloads MS updates and google mail BUT when I try to connect to any other web site bbc.co.uk etc it doesnt connect, the progress bar at bottom of screen travels v. slow towards middle but 10 mins or so later has still not connected. I have disabled Macafee firewall tempory and still no connection. I also disable the desktop firewall at the same time. The laptop is piggy backed with my desktop on XP using a US Robotics 9003 router, the desk top is connected by ethernet cable and the laptop by USB. When I substitute the new Toshiba with my old Toshiba Tecra 8100 on XP it connects immediately with no problems. How is it posiible that I can download MS Updates and my google mail from the vista laptop but no other sites??? I would welcome your thoughts on this matter. quintain -- quintain

Ive got the same problem with my Dell desk top, my work around is to type
'cmd' in the start search box and 'ping www.bbc.co.uk' at the invite to type in the black pop up, then restart. But I would nt mind some advice on how to solve it properly. Hi Quintain, I restart using the restart button on the 'start button
screen'. After the 'ping (space) www.bbc.co.uk (return) did you get the 'number of packets sent and received' data on the subsequent lines? if so were they a positive and equal number (say 4 sent, 4 received, 0 lost) ? If not maybe a different prob, this has worked for me about half a dozen times now. captnkirk; I thought thats what you were saying, i.e. reboot the computer/restart. I did all of that and still no good. Yes to 4 x ping pacakages alll come back as good and fast, no lost packets. It really is a unusual problem not being able to get onto a site by typing in the name or even its IP address. My google side bar also refresshes itself at all times, so I can get gmail, MS updates . Oviously there is a tick box I havent ticked or unticked or even found for this problem. quintain -- quintain
