Default Vista wont change workgroup name

I have Vista Ultimate and when i go into the System Properties window and
change the workgroup name and change the default from Business Network to
Home Computer, it accepts the changes and prompts to reboot.

the problem is that after the reboot vista has made no changes!!!

What's up?

Thanks

Daniel,
Curious, did you finally get Vista to make the change ?
22 minutes later you suggested the same modification in another thread.

Default Vista wont change workgroup name

Hi Winston
Yes partially, my vista computer now(after six identical attempts has added
itself to the "MSHOME" workgroup default used in xp.

However, it still is failing to change the network type to home computer,
and still will not show the wired xp desktop computer already in the
network.(It does show the xp computer if you click the "View full map" link
in the "Network and Sharing Center"

I believe that this change ( if I could make it ) would fix the problem and
want to see if anyone else can change these two settings on their vista
machines.

Two foot notes:
My "Network" widow is intermitantly displaying my computer twice, as
WORKGROUP and MSHOME.

I am using a "Ultimate Pre-release version given to me by Microsoft at the
Vista and Office 2007 Launch in Seattle.

Partially ? That must mean no to my question. It didn't stick.

As far as I know that setting won't change in your specific setup..all it
really does in your case is to reset the workgroup name to the default Vista
choice(Workgroup).

I've the same build and version(Ultimate)as yours on this desktop and the
Ultimate RTM version on another desktop all functional on the same home
network(4 pcs total, the other units are laptops with XP Pro and Home).

The workgroup name is common all of my machines(I chose my own workgroup
name, not using the default names for any o/s(XP=MSHome or Vista=Workgroup).

I just followed the instructions in the link(s) posted in this forum on
Vista File and Sharing. My router is Vista Compatible(DLink DI624) as are
all laptop wireless cards(Dlink DWL G-630). The network is secure with
WPA2/psk, distribute limited Ip addresses and allow by mac address.

The network works with either the Guest Account permission(Vista sharing) or
the same user profiles[username/pw] common to all machines. I actaully
prefer the guest account only because it doesn't waste all the extra space
to store the profiles on each machine and the logon menu is much cleaner.

IPV6 is also installed on all XP machines..but the network functions with or
without it being active.

Wish I could offer more info.
