Default Windows Defender Shuts Itself Off

I just purchased a new computer with Vista Professional installed. I've
noticed that I get messages from time to time that tells me that Defender is
turned off. I don't remember turning it off, so why do I get these messages.
What can I do to prevent it from happening again?

Maybe because you bought a computer with "Vista Professional"?
Really, there is no "Vista Professional" version.. anyways, did you by
chance play around with MSConfig?

I'm sorry. I bought a computer with Vista Home "Premium". I don't even go
near MS Config 'cause I know what problems can happen if you don't know what
you're doing. So the answer to your question would be "no."
