I am tyring to share my hard drives over my home network, but I don't get the
option via Right-Clicking it like I used to in Win XP. In the Network & Sharing Center, my file sharing staus is "Custom". I suspect this is why I can't share my hard drive, can anyone tell me what to do next? Thx in advance. |

Hi.
Sharing files (or drives) across a home network between PCs running both XP and Vista can be tricky. Please take a look at this article, which I think does a nice job of walking people through how to configure Vista to make sharing possible. http://www.microsoft.com/technet/net.../vista_fp.mspx It sounds like you know what to do to make a hard drive shareable in XP. But, just in case, here's an article that goes over the details. http://www.microsoft.com/technet/pro...lesharing.mspx Hope this helps. Please let me know how it works out. I've gone thru that tutorial with no resolve.
I was hoping for a more specific way to have File Sharing show a status of 'ON' as opposed to 'CUSTOM'. Again, thx in advance for any help! "Michael Stroh [MSFT]" wrote: Hi. I have the same sharing problem between my XP Pro and Vista.
I created usernames on both XP Pro and Vista boxes. From my XPPro i can see all files in the Public folder of the Vista box but the Vista box only see my Shared document folder on my XP Pro box ONLY after I restart the XP Pro box and FOR ONLY 10 or 15 seconds ( I pinged the XP Pro box from the Vista box and got about 20 Replies and it went to Request timed out). I would appreciate anyone's feedback on what am I missing here? Hank Nguyen. "filesharingcustom" wrote: I've gone thru that tutorial with no resolve. The File sharing status can't be changed to on when network is not running... You might have turned off workstation service in vista. To turn it on click start as and type services.msc and press enter shown below [image: http://deeload.com/files/0/0w0suew9kifz39/open.jpg] following screen will appear.. [image: http://deeload.com/files/3/eni6s1x7a6gk4r/services.jpg] select workstation service, right click select properties and choose start-up type automatic.... Note: other dependent services must be running.. if they are not, first turn them on. Now try changing file sharing status in sharing center Post a reply if works......
