I purchased a new HP DX2300 a week ago. I have spent countless hours (Days)
trying to setup ICS with no real success. In my desperation I performed a restore on the Vista PC wiping out all installs and configuration I did in the past week. I installed all Windows Vista updates but NO other software of any kind. I enabled ISC on the NIC that connects to the internet. All other configuration was however Windows set it up in the install. I rebooted the Vista PC and when it came up it could surf the internet. I booted up another PC on my LAN (XP Pro) and It could surf the internet and the LAN. The Vista PC could only see itself on the LAN and surf the internet. I made NO changes and after 15 minutes (or so) things changed. At this point, the Vista PC can view the LAN and the internet, the other PC can view the LAN but not the internet. I changed both Network Connections from Public to Private and turned off the Vista Firewall. No change. I rebooted the Vista PC. When it came up both PC’s could surf the internet and the LAN. I booted another PC on my LAN. Now all 3 could surf the internet and see each other on the LAN. I waited 20 minutes and there were no changes. At this point it was getting late and I need to go home. I shut down both PC’s on the LAN but rebooted one of them. When it came up, it could not get to the internet but could see the LAN. I checked the Vista PC and it also could not surf the internet. The Vista PC was not rebooted nor had any configuration been changed. The only change was the 1 PC on the LAN was rebooted and now neither PC can get to the internet. Someone PLEASE HELP! My new Vista PC is a pretty paper weight but I would like to use it! |

I had the same nightmare that you are described, finally worked it out. My new Vista machine is the main pc connected to the cable modem input, other XP machines are connected through the hub. When I changed the TCP/IP settings on the XP machines to "obtain the IP address automatically", the XP machines were able to access the internet (with my file sharing still intact).
I ran all Vista updates then setup the ICS on the network card connected to the internet, now all is working. EggHeadCafe.com - .NET Developer Portal of Choice http://www.eggheadcafe.com |
