I'm having the exact same problem.
My only sound hardware is the Realtek AC97 chipset on my motherboard

Can anyone help?

The fix (on Win 7, which is pretty much Vista) for me was to uninstall
the device via Device Manager, then you shouldn't have a problem once
you reinstall it unless you change the sound quality up. It starts
freezing when you get up around the higher-level settings. If you leave
it at 16-bit, 44100 Hz, it should be alright.
