From my previous posts I can't share between Vista and XP and vice versa. I
followed Glorias Technet link and had done all of what it had suggested already. There was a post from someone else that suggested trying the DOS Net use command. I can successfully use net view and net use to view and use XP shares. Ok, one step closer. Now where do I go? Halfway home... |

If you can net use, the you should be able to map the remote shared folder. To do that, use this command: net use h: \\remotepcipaddress\sharedfolder. The drive letter you want to use and remotepcipaddress is the remote computer IP address. You may be able to use remote computer name too if you have NetBIOS over TCP/IP enabled.

I can do that, but this is supposed to be Windows? I'd like to be able to use
the gui to view network resources. I'd prefer not to have to use a command line environment to connect to other machines. I found another thread which has gotten me yet another step closer. kb922120 has instructions to install the LLTD protocol on the XP machines. [http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/922120] Now from Network and Sharing I can view them on the map, but I still can't access them by name. I can from Explorer map a drive letter using the IP addr. But still no viewing othe XP machines as network locations. I also have to use IP to utilize net use, trying it by server name still fails. In doing research on this probably half of the posts I find are related to this same problem. Maybe an escalation to Microsoft to address it? Correct. You don't need to map the network drives manually. Computer browser issue may cause by name resolution or master browser. Since you can map using IP but not name, I am assuming you may have name resolution issue. Have you enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP?

Yes, Netbios enabled. One of the frst things I tried. Going "by the book"
everything is configured correctly. There's another guy on here who has the exact same problem too. Since I can't get to the Vista machine from XP I also have some sort of authentication problem as well. "Robert L [MVP - Networking]" wrote: Correct. what's the system error code if using this command: net use \\vistahostname? Also I should add it could be firewall issue too.

A third try at posting this
I hate wireless... I just repsonded to this and went to send it and the wireless disconnected and everything was gone. let's try it agian. I get system error 53 when trying to net use \\Vista hostname\share name. I also get it when trying to use \\Vista IP addr\share name. I just posted "XP Vista..." with more details. I have always been able to ping XP from Vista so I assumed I could ping Vista from XP, nope can't do it. I can view Vista as a Workgroup computer but I don't have permission to access it...network path can't be found. This makes sense seeing this latest error. I have both firewalls off and have explicitly enabled the correct ports including 445 on both machines too. I have the same problem and have tried all the same suggestions to no avail. Ironically, back when I was using Vista RC1 there was no issue; everything communicated just fine!

If you have problem to net sue IP also, it is not name resolution issue. I would double check the firewall or any security software.

I'm way beyond that. Please read XP Vista dated 4/9 for a lot more details.
It's gotten to the point where it works for a few minutes, then stops , then starts. No security is in place, firewalls on both machines are turned off, and I have explicitly enabled all the proper ports. For awhile I could even create a network location by name, then it stopped, and I couldn't even do it via IP addr. No changes other than time. Never could view workgroup computers though. The office network has been down for a week, not acceptable. I also can't ping the Vista machine from anywhere. Port 445 is enabled and all profiles for firewall are also turned off. All ports are open. I can ping all the other machies from Vista, but not vice versa. Except when I'm in one of those timeout periods where everything shuts down. Vista is about to be scrapped, it's not worth it. I'll wait for SP1 "Robert L [MVP - Networking]" wrote: If you have problem to net sue IP also, it is not name resolution issue.
