Default Various Problems

First of all, since I upgraded Windows XP to Windows Vista, my computer has
being running quite a bit more slowly with frequent stops, lags, and freezes
that weren't there when I was using Windows XP. These happen usually when I
try to load or open programs or windows. It's difficult to run multiple
programs at a time without the programs slowing down or even freezing
completely for a period of time. Is there any way I can fix this?

My second problem is that when I run Windows Media Player, it flashes
rapidly and freezes and lags a lot. When I press Alt + Tab to switch to
another program, it remains in the background but works just fine (the
buttons "react" when I mouse over them and such) but if I switch back to this
application it starts flashing and freezing again. What is wrong, and how do
I fix this?

My third question is this: Does anyone know the difference of memory usage
and space-on-disk between Windows XP and Windows Vista? Before upgrading to
Vista, over half of my hard drive was empty, but afterward, over half of it
is full.

If you need to know the hardware my computer consists of, say so and I'll
post it.
