Hi Michael,
Many thanks for the help you are giving.
I installed Iranview an could select under "select twain source" my
scanner
so far so good

But after selecting Aqcuire i got the message : Twain error , can't
connect to the drive or the twain driver is not installed....that is
the end.
So have i still to install a Twain-driver and where? Why is my
scanner not used as i could select it.

I have a fealing i am near to a solution because i don't believe in
HP to come up with a solution.

I would appreciate your further help.

Hi,
Does this mean that a full version of the SW can just be coypied
from the site?

Maybe i was wrong to install first the CD from 2002 ...
I downloaded already the related exe-file but without any
result. Does this really mean that the CD is no more needed and
has to work as such.
HP told me to clean-up first the registers and so but that is
really the last thing i want to do.

Further advice is welcome

On top the DVD-drive is hanging and after deleting the program
and restarting the drive is again visible?

any help is welcome

The drivers on the CD are not compatible with Vista. The drivers
at the HP site which Cari provided a link a Vista compatible
drivers and provide basic functions for your scanner in Vista. Be
sure to follow the instructions at the site for installation.

If you have issues with regard to getting those drivers installed
according to those instructions you should contact HP tech
support. --

You would use Vista's built-in scanner applet. I don't have Vista
running at the moment but I believe you'll find it in Control
Panel. You would open that applet as I believe the base drivers
you have will give you functionality within that applet, basic
though that function may be. --

Well, if you've installed the driver, it may be asking your to
select the scanner or driver. However, I'm not running Vista at the
moment so I'm flying blind. Let's try something else. When I've
had a scanner whose software bundle became obsolete even though
there was a compatible driver for the new operating system, I would
use IrfanView as my scaanning software. It hooks into to the
Windows scanner applet. However, when you select acquire in IrfanView,
it will ask the
source, twian or WIA and since you have installed a WIA driver, you
would select WIA, IrfanView does the rest and then opens the Windows
Scanner applet which should begin the scan on its own.

If you don't have IrfanView, go to www.irfanview.com, IrfanView 3.99
or higher is Vista Compatible. Maybe this will get you started. Another
possibility is to go to any scanner enabled application you
already have on your system and look for the "Acquisition" command
and use it to see if it can get you started scanning again.

I just checked back at the HP site about your scanner and it appears, this
is a very limited driver and it is WIA not Twain so you would not or
should not see your scanner listed under twain.

Here's what they say:

"This is the minimum driver required for basic WIA functionality. This
driver enables scanning with the Windows Photo Gallery on Windows Vista or
the Scanner and Camera Wizard on Windows XP. Scanning can also be done
with a variety of 3rd party scanner enabled applications.
You might find that some features are no longer available when using this
basic driver. We are sorry to inform you that a full feature driver for
Windows Vista or Windows XP Professional x64 Edition will not be available
for your HP product in the future. You can upgrade to an HP product that
is fully compatible with Windows Vista or Windows XP Professional x64
Edition if additional features are necessary."

All I can suggest is one, try Windows Photo Gallery on Windows Vista and
see if you can scan through that. If not, HP is not offering anything
beyond that for this scanner and according to the above will not be
offering an updated driver. Hence, if Windows Photo Gallery in Vista
doesn't work for scanning purposes, it would seem your only alternative
would be to purchase new scanner. Scanners are relatively inexpensive
today but if you go that route, I'd check the manufacturer's website to be
sure they have fully funcitonal Vista drivers available now and do some
Google searches to see if there are problems with the scanner in Vista.
Also check user opinions on the scanner, something you can do at
www.cnet.com and www.amazon.com as other users are probably using the
scanner now on Vista and it will give you an idea of what issues may exist
if any.

Sorry, wish I had better news on this. HP should have told you this in
the first place when you contacted them, it would have saved you a lot of
time and effort even if it wasn't exactly the answer you wanted.
