After two days of trying to get the desktop pc running xp home and the laptop
running vista to work, and reading so many similar problems from others I've
finally got it working. So I thought I'd post this here to encourage others
to not give up.

My specs were as follows:

Desktop pc running windows xp, connected to a Belkin ADSL modem with
Wireless-G router through an Ethernet cable.

Laptop running vista connected to the above modem through WIFI.

Both pc and laptop have Norton's Internet Security running on both, desktop
was 2006, laptop is 2007.

My initial problems were as follows:

Both desktop and laptop would not recognise each other on the network.
This was partially fixed when i realised that vista names the workgroup as
WORKGROUP by default. So I changed the workgroup on the desktop to match. I
now could see, laptop on desktop, but still couldn't see desktop on laptop.

When I tried to find it on the network map, it wasn't there so after reading
this article:

I downloaded LLTD Responder component and installed it on the desktop
running xp, this resolved the network map problem. Desktop was now on the
map, although I still couldn't connect to it.

After a lot of searching and coming up with nothing that seemed to work, I
went and took a longer look at Norton's Internet security. First I turned
off both firewalls, but this didn't resolve the issue at all.

So i did a process of trial and error, it turned out to be the intrusion
prevention that was causing all the problems. Even though the ip range was
there, it still wasn't allowing access. So I entered all the addresses into
the trusted page and I could now connect to the desktop, but couldn't open
any of the shared folders. This was due to the fact that I couldn't set
trusted addresses into the 2006 Norton.

Thanks to Norton who were offering all 2006 customers the option of a free
upgrade to 2007 features, I downloaded this upgraded it on desktop, did the
same as I had done on laptop, and all is now resolved. I am able to access
shared folders and printers on both computers.

Sorry it was quiet long winded, but I thought if there is anyone out there
with similar specs that are having these problems it may help, and for others
it may give them some encouragement to not give up.

Glad it helped you! I should have included the link to the Norton Update
from 2006 to 2007 for those that need it it's:

Simply enter Norton Internet Securty 2006 and it will allow you to download
the update to 2007 features.

It depends. If all computers are in the same subnet, add the whole private
IP addresses.
