I have been HOPING hard that they would finally put a network recycle bin
into Vista but again, im not seeing it...or is it there and im missing it?? Its something that most every office atmosphere needs being there is generally a shared hard drive or server that has all the files that the whole office work off of. and if something gets deleted by someone, its GONE!!! How come this isnt something that hasnt come up in the Microsoft R and D team? |

How come you're so keen on this yet Volume Shadow Copies on Windows 2003 server, which delivered it something like 3 years ago, apparently seems to have passed you by? -- Robert Moir http://www.rhymeswithgeek.com |

well ive never heard of Volume Shadow Copies and also dont use a server at
work. Even at home with just a couple computers i have networked, i think there should be something like that. It should be just as common as the recycle bin itself. Im jsut trying to prepare myself for saving my own butt the minute i delete something at work that i realize I needed. And if not by me, it will happen by someone. "Greg" wrote in message news ![]() well ive never heard of Volume Shadow Copies and also dont use a server at work. Even at home with just a couple computers i have networked, i think there should be something like that. Vista supports Volume Shadow Copies. Right-click a folder in your my documents, open properties, click the 'previous versions' tab and enjoy. But don't turn off system restore or it'll stop working. It should be just as common as the recycle bin itself. A properly working "network recycle bin" that wouldn't just meet your needs, or mine, but rather those of just about everyone who uses Windows is surprisingly hard to design. You'll notice it isn't a common 'talked about' feature in any other OS either. Im jsut trying to prepare myself for saving my own butt the minute i delete something at work that i realize I needed. And if not by me, it will happen by someone. That's why those of us who are in the business reccomend daily backups for irreplacable data. Even with a "network aware" recycle bin, even a magical one that is managed by your own personal data security unicorn, there is no substitute for backups if the data really is that important. -- Robert Moir http://www.rhymeswithgeek.com |

Yup VSS is the way to go. Have been putting this in place at quite a few places, but no end users have ever used/heard of it so once enabled it's a case of training people how it works :E Symantec's LivesState has also proved to be a useful application once optimally configured. Just my 2 cents ![]() -- DC187 |
