Default Uninstalling Norton appears to have locked network card.

I've run into a network config issue that is driving me insane and as of now
am fully blaming Norton for. The system is a brand new HP that came with a
trial version of Norton Internet Security. Out of the box everything worked
fine. Then a coworker uninstalled the trial Internet Securtity (without
using the Norton Removal Tool), clicked the "restart now" button after the
uninstall was complete, and upon restarting we've been unable to do anything
with the NIC.

Pinging 127.0.0.1 works fine, but when it comes to connecting to anything
that's a no go. The part this is really messing with me is manually
configured the IP adress, subnet, gateway, etc. But after doing this and
hitting ok a couple of times, the IP address is being autoconfigured and the
IP address i assigned is showing up under Subnet mask.

As of this point I'm stumped. Seeing as the problems started with the
restart following the Norton uninstall i'm almost certain this was the
cuplrit, I just can't figure out what i could have done. Is it possible that
it's locked ports down and artifacts from the uninstall are messing things up?

As an update for some reason Vista wouldn't take an IP address between
XXX.XXX.XXX.2 through XXX.XXX.XXX.20. By setting the IP address at 21+
everything works fine. Seeing as there are only 5 total devices connected to
the network with static IPs, I have no clue why i had to go to the 21+ range
of IP addresses to avoid IP conflicts. So in a nutshell i got it working,
but am confused as to the solution.

Hi BigAl,

First off if you unistal make sure you use the removal tool from their
website.
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...05033108162039

But befor you do that enter the ip address/addresses of the computer(s) on
your network into the trusted sites.

2007
Norton Internet Security Tab,
Settings,
Intrusion Prevention
Trust Control
Trusted. (enter ip's here)

I had this problem with Norton Internet Security, once I entered the ip
addresses of the pc's on my network it went away. It appears that even
though the ip range has been entered into the firewall, the intrusion
preventing screws it all up.

If you have 2006 download the free update to 2007 features he
http://www.symantec.com/home_homeoff...il d=standard

And follow above.

Best wishes,
Linda

Hi LindaAnn,

Thanks very much for the info about the Removal Tool on Norton's site. I've
been trying to get their crap off my computer for hours. Vista's 'program
uninstall' wouldn't allow me to. I would click on any program that mentioned
Norton or Symantic, but it would show NO choices, others would allow for
uninstall, repair etc, but not Norton's. It was driving me crazy. Your advice
about the Removal tool worked wonders.

Thanks again,
Lenny G
