Default Networking with Vista/Linksys router

We have just recently purchased a laptop with vista on it, our main computer
is running xp. We cannot get the two computers to network together they are
showing that they are sharing but nothing will happen any help??
Also we are having a problem with our linksys wireless router. Every time we
shut down our main computer, then reboot we loose our internet service. We
tried unplugging router but it takes a 1/2 hour before anything happens, any
advice?

Default Networking with Vista/Linksys router

I have had a similar issue - see below. I am not using Internet Connection Sharing - I am using a router. Any help would be useful, thanx
================================================== =========
Background:
=========
I have a Vista laptop and a CompUSA router (at my house). I was having a XP
tablet PC which worked like a charm - I open it, plug in the Ethernet wire
and it gets connected, no problem. But with Vista, it doesn't work like
that. I have to POWER RESET my router everytime to get my internet
connectivity working. Without the power reset, my vista computer can see my
other computer on the network, but the DNS configuration somehow doesn't
seem to work

My computer details:
===============
Machine - Companq NC 8430 (2 GB memory)
Network adapter - Broadcom NetXTreme
Router - CompUSA router
See image attached

What I tried:
=========
I thought I may need to update the driver, so went to the Broadcom site and
downloaded the latest driver.
http://www.broadcom.com/docs/driver_...-10.8.0.0a.zip.
After this, the functionality seems to work OK. But Vista started
bluescreening every 4-5 hrs or whenever I went to standby and back (not sure
exactly what's the cause). So, I have now reverted back the driver install.

Any ideas/tips would help.

The Vista driver from the Broadcom site is only applicable to desktop
NetXtreme 5705 models, it does not work with any other 570x models. If yours
is not the 5705 then the XP 10.24d driver is your only choice and applicable
to 5700, 5701, 5702.

Is your router compatible with Vista?
Run this Msft Internet Connectivity Tool
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/usi...d/default.mspx
Note: some steps/tests take a long time ")

This KB http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932134 may help.
Also see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928233/en-us

If there is no new firmware for your router which might resolve
issues on the router side, then I'd recommend replacing it.

Default Networking with Vista/Linksys router

Thanx Barb for the pointers ! I looked at the KB Article:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928233 - but that solves the problem of
Vista not getting an IP address. In my case - the vista machine DOES get an
IP address - it just can't resolve URLs (some problem with DNS).

My compusa router is http://fmi.compusa.com/driver.asp?SKU=313831 - note
that there are no firmware upgrades that are available (I got a cheap
router, what more can I expect

Any help would be useful !

Default Networking with Vista/Linksys router

did you run the test referenced in
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932134 ?

Your best bet is replacing that router.
