Dell XPS 410 Vista ethernet connection to an old Gateway ME Comput

I'm interested in connecting thru a Netgear router an ethernet connection to
a usb ethernet adapter on my old Gateway computer running on ME. Has anyone
tried this and does it work? Thanks
