I have a Home Theater PC that runs Vista and I want to set it up to connect
to our office PC that runs XP. I have the HTPC connected to the wired cable modem and to the wireless router. The office pc connects to the internet fine with the wireless connection, but I cannot get the two computers to connect! :P I am trying to set up a network like the one mentioned here (http://www.intel.com/personal/how-to...d-wireless.htm) But of course the directions are for XP and I need to set this up on my Vista machine and I cannot figure it out for the life of me! Most tutorials that I find online for Vista networks are for 100% wired or 100% wireless networks.. can someone please help me set up this combo network? You can also email me at soadchik (at) aol (dot) com Thanks in advance Sumati |

When it connects to the Internet, you will know that you have connectivity. Then you work on the Vista / XP combo, and that will be the same for WiFi / Ethernet as for Ethernet / Ethernet. When the Home Theater computer can connect to the Internet: * Set the Network Location Type to "Private". This implies that your computers are secure, behind a perimeter firewall or a NAT router, and opens the personal firewall for file sharing. * Check / set "Password protected sharing" (PPS). Disabling PPS is the equivalent of enabling Simple File Sharing, in Windows XP. * Setup shared folders and printers. If you enabled PPS, you should setup access for individual users. If you disabled PPS, you setup access for "Guest" or "Everyone". http://www.microsoft.com/technet/network/evaluate/vista_fp.mspx http://www.microsoft.com/technet/net.../vista_fp.mspx And check issues which involve both XP and Vista, on both computers! * Make sure that NetBT is Enabled consistently. * Make sure that any third party firewalls are properly setup. * Make sure that name resolution is consistently setup. http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2006/12/windows-xp-and-vista-on-lan-together.html http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2006/1...-together.html -- Cheers, Chuck, MS-MVP [Windows - Networking] http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/ Paranoia is not a problem, when it's a normal response from experience.
