Default windows movie maker:black preview screen

Here we are a year on and 10 posts here and guess wot? I have used windows
movie maker many many times ..... I am taking video from my digital video
camera to edit it into a watchable movie - Also using movie maker to extract
single frames...... Oh no I'm not - all I get is a blank blank screen on the
preview. Although the entire video will play from videos. Impossible to get
single frames off and non of the complied movie will play - However the
preinstalled sample vidoe clips of the bear an butterfly play back perfect!!
No fix from micro soft - Bloody Appauling in my opinion!!!

i am creating a video for our school's banquet,and everytime i add a
transition to any slide, the preview screen goes black and i have to get rid
of the transitions to see a picture. Sometimes even doing that doesn't work.
Anyone know what to do? i really need these transitions to make it look good.

What video card do you have? Is there a video card driver update available?

Many thanks to the contributors to this topic which I came across when
searching for something else.

I have just purchased a new computer with Vista pre-installed and have been
trying out my old software on it, including Pinnacle Studio 9 which worked
fine on my old XP computer.

I don't have the answer to this question but merely make the comment that I
have the same problem of a blank preview window on Pinnacle Studio 9. I
have assumed it was because that version was not fully compatible with Vista
and resigned myself to buying the later version 11.

Having read some of the very helpful replies and references I am now not too
sure that spending the £90 would solve my problem.

What's the source video type?
Does it output the video correctly?

How did you "download" it off a DVD? What is the local file extension for
the file?

You can use Device Manager to do that.

Run dxdiag.exe . Go to the "Display" page. That'll say the Name,
Manufacturer, and Driver information.

You can then check with the manufacturer's web site for updated drivers.
