Default Wireless Connection in Vista

Hi-
Currently, I have a Dell with XP that uses a wireless connection to Verizon
DSL which works great using Verizon's prescribed Westell Versalink 327w
router/modem from 2004.

I recently bought a new HP with Windows VISTA. While it SEES the wireless
network connection, it will not connect to the internet. I've spoken with
Verizon who even checked and adjusted the settings through a cable
connection, but they told me all is fine on their end and as far as they can
tell.

Is my router not compatible with Vista, and if that is the case, would I
have to buy a new router/modem? OR, is it something with HP? Again, it works
GREAT on my XP computer. The new computer with Vista ALSO works fine when it
is connected to the modem through a cable, but the wireless thing is
completely strange---it recognizes the signal but will not connect to the
Internet. Please help---any advice is appreciated.

Do you have security turned on the router? WEP or WPA2 Personal?

Default Wireless Connection in Vista

This is a long-shot but.....

I have found that with some providers, the service is configured
around the MAC address of the adapter that was connected when you started
service. It would make sense that your XP machine would still work.

If you want to use both computers on the network, I would suggest buying a
router and having the router clone the MAC address of the XP machine. Then
the computers on your side of the network are transparent to Verizon. I use
the Comcast cable Internet service and there is a configuration CD which
will assign the MAC address to their service. If I don't use the clone
feature in my router, I have no service.

This may not apply, but you can try it....

I didn't see any mention of security/encryption settings. Perhaps the older
router does not support the encryption type used by the newer Vista machine.
If that is the case, maybe there is a firmware upgrade for the router...or a
new router needs to be purchased.
