I have no affiliation to this company, but it has solved all my networking
and file and printer sharing issues between Vista and XP.

www.networkmagic.com

I highly recommend this program. My wireless network is now exactly how I
want it and I also have web access to all my shared folders.

Ed,

Thanks for the initiative and good will! Hope you do not mind two
questions: Can I use it to Backup my computers, all of them, to a USB 2.0
250GB Hard Drive? What I mean is will it "see" the USB 2.0 hard drive that
is installed in another computer? I want to use Acronis True Image 10 to
backup ALL my computers into that USB 2.0 Hard Drive. I simply cannot "see"
the USB Hard Drive when I am using Networking and Sharing! My anticipated
gratitude for your response,

Cheers,

Gene

Interesting that you ask that question Gene.

I have two 250GB external USB drives that I have set up to be shared on my
network and I can't access them on my wireless network either.

The Networkmagic program has not resolved this issue, but apparently users
are supposed to be able to access external USB drives on the network. I
currently have an ongoing discussion with their tech support in regards to
this to see if there is a solution.

This is a widely experienced problem with Vista and NAS drives. Mine is a
Coolmax CN-550 (combo NAS and USB hard drive) and I can see the drive on the
network, but cannot access subfolders or files in subfolders of any of the
shared folders on the NAS drive. Read through the forums anywhere and you'll
find tons of complaints about this, some suggestions, but, so far, no one has
a solution - including Microsoft.

phillfri,

I'm sorry you're experiencing trouble. Your NAS uses uC OS, and from what I
can tell is a Samba-based device. The problem may be a mismatch in NTLM
between Vista and the NAS. Vista uses NTLM v2.

If you are using a Samba-based NAS device:
- Contact the manufacturer for a firmware upgrade to use version 3.0.23 or
later
- Follow manufacturer's instructions for enabling NTLMv2 through their
configuration interface

Please post back with results.
