Default Slow Internet Connection

Hi There,
Sorry if this is not the right place to post this question but here goes.
We have just bought a new computer with Vista along with an ADSL2 modum
which is connected via USB.
The problem we are having is that the computer starts quickly (there are
minimum startup items) but the internet connection does not start straight
away. You get the 2 crossed screens straight away and then some time later
the little world comes up and the internet is connected. The internet speed
is amazingly quick as we must be very near an exchange. The period of
waiting is measured in mins not seconds!

You are posting in the IE newsgroup. Does that mean that you have IE opening
at startup? What is in your startup? Have you tried disabling it and seeing if that
changes your startup time (at least as far as networking is concerned)?
E.g. in other versions of Windows (so perhaps in Vista too?) you could do
at least some of this by pressing and holding a Shift- key during the boot.

In case it is only IE associated with the symptom you could try seeing
if you have some unnecessary options checked in the Options Connections dialog.
E.g. in other versions of Windows (so perhaps in Vista too?) the Automatic Configuration
dialog does not make very clear that its options only apply if there is a server
on the other side which understands the negotiation protocols it implies.
If there is not timeouts could result until standard protocols could be resorted to.

Hmm... I can't find any web documents which support this idea.
I can't even find anecdotal evidence (e.g. in the newsgroups)
that changing such unnecessary settings can avoid such symptoms.
YMMV.

To solicit better information about your OS or wider experience
in dealing with this symptom I am cross-posting my reply to
Vista Networking.

Good luck

Default Slow Internet Connection

Hi Robert,

Thanks for the help. I need to be clearer. We have Vista which connects to
the ADSL modum via a network cable. When we start up the machine it starts
quickly but then there is a delay to connect to the network and then there is
an even bigger delay in connecting to the Internet which can be like 5 mins
or more. I guess IE does not come into this as I don't try to open it but I
don't know.

It now seem that I should be in the network help.

Cheers
Buster
