Default Networking Desktop to Laptop

Very new to the whole networking thing.
Yesterday I was networking me laptop to desktop.
The laptop is brand new ACER with preinstalled Vista
The desktop is a Sony w/ upgrade to Vista from XP.
Anyway I am sure I did something stupid.
Running with wireless LinkSys router (model# ???) do not have in front of me
at the moment.
Problem is my interent is no loger working or e-mail, etc.
Contacted Comcast and they tested everything and seems to be working fine.
(another hour of my life wasted by them).
The connection is not reading the modem now. Unplugged from router for time
being and put directly into destop from modem. Still nothing. Please help I
know I am babbling. Frustrated with networking and the Vist experiance so far.
