This is my first post and rather a long one at that. Hopefully it gives
enough detail for those who know such things to tell me if a) I’ve got a
hardware problem, b) I’ve got a configuration problem or c) I’m just being
stupid!

I took delivery of a new Desktop PC last week. The seller had preloaded
Vista and one of my first jobs was to get it onto my home network. A week
later I’ve still not managed and hope that someone here may be able to help
me.

My home set up is a Netgear DG834g Wireless router to which I connect two
laptops wirelessly. I then have a cat 5 cable going to a room in my backyard
which has a hub. Into the hub I have a file server running SME, my current
XP based desktop and now my new desktop.

When I first set up the network some while ago on advice from someone I
decided not to use DHCP and therefore all machines have their own IP address.

I’ve started by just trying to ping to and from my new PC and have not yet
succeeded. Can anyone help please? I include an “ipconfig /all� , a “route
print� and a series of “tracert� commands to various machines on the network.
192.168.0.1 is my router, 192.168.0.4 is my current XP desktop, 192.168.0.7
is the SME server and 192.168.0.9 is the new machine (although I’ve tried a
couple of ip addresses for it in the vain hope that it might make a
difference – it didn’t!)

Although not printed out here I noted that if I pinged from the Vista
machine the result does change depending on the status of Windows Firewall.
If enabled, I get a time out message and if disabled I get a “destination
host unobtainable� message.

I have tried three different cables from the Vista PC to the hub and I’ve
tried plugging into different ports on the hub.

I don’t even know if the network adaptor is working although device manager
assures me that it is. If there is a hardware problem I can just send the PC
back to the supplier and get them to sort it out but if it’s a configuration
problem I’d much rather get it sorted out at home. Apologies for such a long
post but hopefully it gives the expert something to chew on.

Here follows two logs – first from the Vista machine and then by way of
comparison from the XP desktop.

It seems to me you can't ping or receive Destination host unreachable because of IPv6. Try to disable the IPv6 and post back with the result. This link may help too.

Step by step troubleshooting ...Clearly not a simple home LAN with a Vista PC and a XP PC or two. Did ... Disable the IPv6 from the property page of the NIC. ...

Hi Bob

Thanks for your response. I've done as you suggested and disabled IPv6,
restarted my machine and tried again. Sadly with no difference to the
result.

I don't know if it's helpful but here's the result of the "ipconfig", "route

Step by step troubleshooting ...Clearly not a simple home LAN with a Vista PC and a XP PC or two. Did ... Disable the IPv6 from the property page of the NIC. ...

I’ve started by just trying to ping to and from my new PC and have not yet
succeeded. Can anyone help please? I include an “ipconfig /all� , a “route
print� and a series of “tracert� commands to various machines on the network.
192.168.0.1 is my router, 192.168.0.4 is my current XP desktop, 192.168.0.7
is the SME server and 192.168.0.9 is the new machine (although I’ve tried a
couple of ip addresses for it in the vain hope that it might make a
difference – it didn’t!)

Although not printed out here I noted that if I pinged from the Vista
machine the result does change depending on the status of Windows Firewall.
If enabled, I get a time out message and if disabled I get a “destination
host unobtainable� message.

I have tried three different cables from the Vista PC to the hub and I’ve
tried plugging into different ports on the hub.

I don’t even know if the network adaptor is working although device manager
assures me that it is. If there is a hardware problem I can just send the PC
back to the supplier and get them to sort it out but if it’s a configuration
problem I’d much rather get it sorted out at home. Apologies for such a long
post but hopefully it gives the expert something to chew on.

Here follows two logs – first from the Vista machine and then by way of
comparison from the XP desktop.

I'm now thinking this is a hardware problem. I booted the vista pc iwth a
bootable CD containing Knoppix 5.1 ( a version of Linux that runs from the
CD) and configured the network card with this. When I used ping I got
exactly the same result. Any more ideas welcome but I think that I'll
contact the supplier on MOnday or Tuesday and see if they want to take the PC
back or they want me to open the box!
