My problem is this:
1. New vista home basic notebook wirelessly connected to home network peer
to peer via router.
2. Samsung SCX 4100 printer attached to windows XP SP2 machine via USB.
3. Vista notebook can see the printer on XP machine fine.
4. Have tried adding new printer to vista machine but will not correctly
add the networked xp.
5. Have tried adding local samsung print driver to vista machine and
changing port to \\windows machine\samsung etc etc (as has been written up)
.... will locate port but when try to print - forget it.
6. Have tried network magic on both machines and they see each other but
still can't get printer to fire up.

Any more clues before I snap?

Hello all! I solved teh problem by following these directions:
1. Download the Windows Vista printer driver for the SCX-4216F multifunction
printer from www.samsung.com.
2. Install the driver on your Windows Vista computer. During
installation, you'll be prompted to connect the printer to your computer.
Choose the option to proceed with installation without connecting the printer.
3. After installation completes, open the Printers applet from the
Windows Vista Control Panel.
4. Right-click on the new Samsung SCX-4100 Series printer and choose
Properties.
5. Go to the Ports tab.
6. Click Add Port…, select Local Port, then click New Port…
7. For the port name, enter exactly the network path and share name of
your printer (e.g. \\RECEPTION\Samsung SCX-4×16 Series).
8. Click OK, and double-check that this new port is selected with the
checkbox next to it.
9. Click OK to close the printer properties.

The only other thing I did was turn off that the printer would work offline.
