I've been playing around with both the 32 and 64 Bit versions of Vista
Ultimate on my new PC. The system specs are as follows; CPU: Intel Q6600 (Quad Core 2.4) MB: Intel DG965WH RAM: 4Gb (1Gb Transcend PC 800MHz x 4) Video: PNY 8800GTS In Vista 32-Bit, System runs well (Good CPU Utilization) but will not see all 4Gb RAM (3.2+GB Seen), system seems to be using a fair amount of RAM. Windows Experience score Rates the CPU at 5.9 In Vista 64-Bit Systetm runs significantly slower than the 32-Bit version. CPU Utilization near 50% with system at idle for all four cores. Running simple software pegs all four cores at 100%. System sees all four Gb and RAM utilization is better than in the 32-Bit. Windows Experience Score has dropped the CPU to 4.6. Two other IT people at work with similar system specs have the same problem in 64-Bit Vista. Anyone getting good results running 64-Bit Vista on an Intel Quad-core? ajf |

Yes, but the 64-bit is so slow, that I can't even use Windows Explorer
effectivly. 32-Bit works like it should. Also, why would my "Winodws Experience score" drop from 5.9 to 4.6 when switching from 32 to 64-Bit. The more free ram you have means that Vista is not doing its job correctly. Ram is MUCH faster than harddrive speeds, therefore Vista is making use of the fast stuff and leaving the slower drives for XP. Second 32 bit systems have trouble with more than 3 gig of ram, just the way it is. Same system, 32 bit versus 64 bit, 32 bit has issues. |

Update to problem.
While searching the internet, I found that this is a common problem with the Q6600 processor and more than 4gb of RAM. I removed two sticks of RAM and the speed improved (Even the Windows Experience CPU score was back up to 5.9). I then added two additional 512 Sticks to make a total of 3Gb and fill all four RAM slots. System is still working like it should. So, it looks like Vista-64 Ultiimate has problems on computers with the Q6600 and 4GB of RAM. ajf "ajf" wrote: I've been playing around with both the 32 and 64 Bit versions of Vista Ultimate on my new PC. Well, I don't think it's due to your processor, however I do think it is either the board or vista. I as well have an intel dg965wh board with 4GB of OCZ DDR2 800MHZ RAM. Running in 32bit vista Business Edition, It was perfect, though it only registered 3.2GB of RAM due to it being a 32bit OS. I Loaded in a 64bit version and my CPU usage went off the charts, until I took out 2GB of RAM and since then it's been working perfectly. -- Moebius ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Moebius's Profile: http://forums.techarena.in/member.php?userid=26606 View this thread: http://forums.techarena.in/showthread.php?t=758425 http://forums.techarena.in |

I found other forums where people had the same problems with the Q6600, 4GB
RAM and most had the nVidia 8800 GTS/GTX. It was happening with Asus, MSI and Intel boards. For some, downgrading the Bios a few versions to where the user had more control over the "memory hole" area for the video card corrected the problem. I will update the post with more URLs to the other forums when I get back to work (I placed them in my favorites at the office) AJF "Moebius" wrote: Well, I don't think it's due to your processor, however I do think it is either the board or vista. I just built a system with a Q6600. I've got an Asus P5W DH Deluxe board and 4 GB of RAM. I'm not having any speed issues so far. The CPU is scoring 5.9 - and the RAM 5.5. The system is still initializing the Raid volumes that I built with the ICH7 Southbridge (having a Raid 5 volume and a Raid 1 volume on a desktop is going to be nice). The one catch I had when I started out was that the motherboard only registered 3.2 GB of RAM as available until I went in and changed an option to allow a 64 bit OS to see the entire RAM amount. That might be a spot to look for in your BIOS if you're having issues with speed and 4 GB of RAM. Bamf -- bamf |

Hi Drew: Thanks for your message. It's very helpful. I still have some questions. Maybe you can help me again. Does Vista recognize all 4 Gb memory? Does it work with photoshop cs3, coreldraw x4, finale, adobe audition cs3, macromedia suite, and software like this?
