Default I want to continue my dowload while in sleep mode

vista home permium upgrade, dsl connection, im downloading a large file and
want to keep my connection while in sleep mode what am i missing?

Unfortunately you can't continue a download while your computer is sleeping.

What sleep mode actually is. It refers to the computer going to sleep, not
you.

You can set power management to turn off things like the screen and so-on
when the computer is unattended for a while, and hopefully this will be
sufficient for your needs.

my short term memory is bad... but that was possible in xp right? and thanks
for the advice i didnt even think about making the hibernation time longer

No, I don't think it's ever been possible in XP.

It may well be that some computers have got specialist power management that
might enable this sort of thing (laptops perhaps?), but that isn't really
the operating system.

No, it wasn't possible in XP either. While you could schedule a task (which
could wake your computer up), if your PC is asleep the nic isn't operating.
As others have mentioned you can change the power scheme so that it just
puts the disk and monitor asleep and leaves the computer operating.
