On one machine I get the message "Windows cannot create a network map for the
selected type of network connection." whenever I ask it to draw the full map. As far as I know I have a perfectly ordinary type of network, and its set to be a "Private Network" so I'm not sure why it won't work. How can I find out what "type" of network connection it thinks I have, or why that would mean it can't create a map of it? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. |

this works only with vista computers on a network...
however there was a patch that enabled XP to be "seen" on the map to. What OS do the other computers have? "Edward Wohlman" wrote in message ... Link Layer Topology Discovery (LLTD) Responder (KB922120)
for XP Pro or XP Home http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=922120 Note: It does not fix networking problems; only allows the XP machine to be mapped on the network as Vista sees to interpret. I have the exact same problem. I'm on a private network and all other XP
computers on the network have the link layer topology discovery thing installed and network discovery is turned on. When I click View Full Map it gives me a message saying "Windows cannot create a network map for the selected type of network connection." All the responses I've seen so far are people saying to make sure the LLTD update is installed on XP computers but this is already done! It's not an issue with the network since I can find the other computers and share files with no problems. It has something to do with the settings on the computer attempting to create the map. The frustrating part is that when I first started using Vista this feature worked fine but then it mysteriously stopped working. Hopefully someone can figure out what's going on here. I get the same problem phoward, It works fine for a bit then stops completely, I know the link layer topology depends on the type of cables, hubs, switchs, Network-Cards and network setup, It all depends on these parts to function properly and its quite picky. Personally I wouldnt worry about it at all since it talks way too much over the network and only displays a page showing your computer, a router and the INet icon. -- dmex |

Is this machine wired and using an NVidia ethernet NIC?

I was going to ask the same question. If so, the update from WU/MU probably
is the culprit. It's the NVIDIA nforce Networking Controller. I can't find the KB number, but it was installed on 5/18. Rolling back to previous driver solved the problem here. -- ______________________________ Walter B waltblanch[at]tampabay[dot]rr[dot]com ______________________________ "Barb Bowman" wrote in message ... I had similar issue with Vista not being able to draw Network Map. What was causing the problem in my case was I had updated the Nvidia Ethernet Driver (65.55) and when I rolled back to the original driver installed by Vista, I'm now able to draw the Network Map.
This driver (NVidia Ethernet driver 65.55) must be breaking the LLTD (Link Layer Topology Discovery Protocol) which I understand is what Vista uses to discover your network topology and to draw a network map. Hope this works for you ![]() EggHeadCafe.com - .NET Developer Portal of Choice http://www.eggheadcafe.com |

I experienced that problem. It was caused by WU, nVidia network Controller
driver v.65.5.5.0. Roll back to v.6.2.0.126. Paul "MAJON322" wrote in message ... "phoward131" wrote: I have the exact same problem.
