I wonder if anyone has actually managed to get Vista and Win98 to share
files with each other. I have a Win98 peer-to-peer network with 2 win98
machines and their associated printers. I have not had any problem getting
Vista (or even a visiting Mac machine) to see and access the shared folders
on the Win98s. However the Win98 machines can only see the existance of
"Public", "Users", and a third folder I added called "c drive". When
accessing the "c drive" folder a Win98 machine gets "access denied". When
right or left clicking on either of the other two Vista folders Win98
immediately freezes and requires a cold reboot to recover. ( The problems
are common to both Win98 machines.)

I've read the Microsoft "File and Printer Sharing in Windows Vista" article
(vista_fp) and most of the Nitecruzr articles as well. As a result I've
tried the following:

1) Checked firewalls ( there are none on 98 and on Vista the NetBIOS and SMB
ports are all open by default for private networks).

2) Made sure the "everyone" account appears in both the "share" and
"security" tabs for the "Public" and "User" folders. (I could not find a
way to add "everyone" to the security tab for the "c drive" folder but it is
listed in the "share" tab.)

3)Tried sharing the Vista folders with "full control" since Tim (above) said
it solved his problem, although he was only networking 2 Vista machines.

4)Upgraded a Win98 machine to use NTLM2 to correspond with Vista (per the
Microsoft article).

5)Downgraded Vista to NTLM to correspond to Win98 (per second alternative in
the Microsoft article).

6)Specifically enabled NetBIOS over TCP/IP on Vista since it can't be turned
off on Win98 (option selected and grayed out).

7)Disabled Vista's Browse Master since it is supplied by Win98 machines.

None of these checks or changes made any difference to the way file sharing
works and doesn't work. Windows 98 either crashes or gets "access denied"
when accessing Vista folders.

Try one more thing. Create the same username on all computers. This search result may help too.

I have the identical problem except mine is with a ME computer. Have tried
all the same things you did with no results. As with you, my Vista see all
the files on the ME computer
and I can work with them fine, but when the ME computer attempts to access
the Vista files, either "Access Denied" is displayed or the computer
freezes requiring a cold reboot. Anyone out there successfully using a
Win98 or ME computer on a home network without any of these problems?? .

As far as I can tell, a Win98 peer-to-peer network doesn't have "users".
Anyone who sits down at the keyboard is the user. Perhaps you are thinking
of a "Client for Microsoft Networks" situation where the Win98 machines need
to log in to a network controlled by a server. In the peer-to-peer case the
log on is called "Windows Logon". (It looks like Hsherman is having exactly
the same problem with with Windows ME.)

Also when you say "Create the same username on all computers", I'm not sure
what you mean. The user account on Vista is currently "ron". Do you mean I
should set up the other computers as "Client for Microsoft Networks" and set
each of their user names as "ron" also? Will the Win98 network continue to
function when the portable Vista machine is removed?

You might try this advice from some prior posts. Please let us know if it
helps.

1. Click the Start button, type "regedit" in the Start Search box, and
press Enter.

2. Click "Continue" in the User Account Control prompt.

3. Open this registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Lsa

4. If they don't already exist, create DWORD values named
LmCompatibilityLevel and NoLmHash.

5. Set LMCompatibilityLevel to 1.

6. Set NoLmHash to 0.

7. Restart the Vista computer.

8. Go to Control Panel User Accounts, click "Change your password",
enter your current password in the boxes for "Current password", "New
password", and "Confirm new password", and click "Change password".

For the security reason, the Win98 has different login ID may not be able to access the Vista. To test it, use net use \\vistaipaddress from the win98. What's the system code? Or this link may help,

When I use "net use" I do not get an error code. I get "disk, OK, 0, 1, The
command was completed successfully" for all 3 shared folders (public,
users, and share). (To simplify using the Win98 dos box, I changed the 3rd
folder being shared from "c drive" to "share"). It looks to me like the net
use command is a dos method of displaying the existance of the shared folder
names on the Vista computer. Windows Explorer on Win98 does the same thing
successfully. The problem occurrs when clicking on the desired folder in
Explorer: when clicking on the "share" folder I get "access denied" and for
the Public and Users folders I get a Win98 crash requiring a cold boot to
recover.

Since the LMCompatibility was already set to 1 per item 5 in my original
post, I only had to change NoLMHash from 1 to 0. I did not go through the
password changes since Vista is not using password protected sharing. The
Microsoft article said that password protected sharing is optional and if it
is disabled (as in my case), I just need to select the Guest or Everyone
account and that this is equivalent to simple file sharing in XP. (The
Microsoft article only mentions Windows 98 by name in the section discussing
the NTLM changes.)

In any case, changing NoLMHash to 0 did not change the symptoms observed on
the Win 98 machines: "access denied" when clicking on the "share" folder and
crash requiring a cold reboot when clicking on either the "Public" or
"Users" folder.
