I am trying to makea small ome network between an xp macine and a vista home
premium laptop. the xp has a printer i want to use. i have set both to the same workgroup and can see both machines in the network places but when i click on the xp machine to find folders (shared) or printer it will not let me see it. I try to diagnos and it says "windows sent the request to the DNS server and the server responded thaat the name was unknown" how can it be unknown it it finds and loads the xp maching in the network places?? Please help... all i really want to do is print to this printer on teh other machine. Why does it have to be so difficult???? |

I'm having similar issues. I've seen some variations of this below, but none
of the information has solved the problem... yet. Basically, I have three computers hooked up to a Belkin F5D7230-4 router: a new Vista machine wireless, an old XP laptop wireless and an old desktop wired. All are on the same workgroup. I did the Linked Layer Responder on the XP computers so that the Vista computer shows up in the WORKGROUP window. The XP computers ALSO show up in the Network Map on the Vista machine. However, I cannot open the Vista computer from the XPs and the XP machines don't show up in the actual Network window. I've got simple file sharing on the XP computers. The Vista is on a private network with file sharing on. I even tried to make the root directories of my hard drives on the Vista machine sharable. And most interestingly, the XP laptop and the XP desk top can still transfer files back and forth. So it has to be the Vista machine. I'd feel like an idiot but it looks like I'm not the only one having these problems. I've followed many of the threads below and tweaked registries and such to no avail. Is there anything I've mentioned above simply fixable? I mean really, how can this be so difficult? Thanks very much for any advice. I'm having the exact same problem!!! There is one desktop and 2 laptops on
the network...the desktop and one laptop is XP and I have Vista home premium...The two xp computers share fine but mine does not. The problem is identical. Please let me know if you figure this out!!!! Chrissy "El D" wrote: I'm having similar issues. I've seen some variations of this below, but none of the information has solved the problem... yet.
