Are you running Windows One Care ?
If so, it has its own Firewall and shuts down the regular firewall.
The same holds true if you have MacAfee or Norton running.

Hi, Chas.

How do you know that your firewall doesn't stay on? The Vista firewall is
ALWAYS ON - unless you changed it.

Please tell us which firewall you are talking about. The one built into
Vista? Or one you've added?

It would also help us help you if you will mention the make and model of
your computer, which version of Vista you are running, and whether it was
pre-installed on your computer when you bought it or you bought Vista and
installed it yourself.

Default windows firewall

I am running a HP dv6226us lap-top w/V-home preminum & when the trial version
of Norton ran out I paid to re-instate it. After re-logging on Norton asked
if I wanted it to run/be the firewall instead of windows, I said no cause I
wanted windows to track the programs/updates. I hope I made the right
decision. Defender is on & my pre-installed firewall is on, I just don't
have Norton configged for the fire wall.

I tried to have both on but no........

Any comments would be nice if I'm right or wrong.

Thanks,

I'm having a similar problem. I have a new Acer 6292 Travelmate running
Vista Business that was pre-installed. I connect to the internet via D-Link
wireless router and run AVG (free) antivirus (no firewall in this version).
Every time I turn on the computer and connect to the internet the Windows
Security Centre pops up telling me Windows Firewall is off. Each time I
manually turn it on. How can I set it so it remains permanently on? Thanks.

Hi White:
I installed a third part firewall that built in my anti-virus soft, and
close firwall of Vista. Vista secure center indicates that both firewall are
closed , while my own firewall is really working!! Why???
thanks!

Perhaps because Vista doesn't recognize that particular 3rd party
firewall. It's up to the firewall's programmers to ensdure that it is
recognized by Vista. Has its manufacturer assured you that it is, in
fact, designed to run on Vista?
