I got a new PC with Vista and tried to hook it into my existing home network
which is all XP. Things weren't working for awhile so I went to an existing network computer (an HP) and created a new wireless network with the same name but different key and authentication/encryption type as the original network. The original issue I was having with the Vista computer got resolved and now, it can access all of the computers on the network EXCEPT the HP whose settings I changed. The error message I get from the Vista is that it's pinging HP but not getting a response back. I'm guessing I need to change the original HP back but I have no idea how to do that. Also, even though I can access all the computers (excpet HP) from the Vista one, the computers can see the Vista computer but get prompted for a UN/PW when they try to access it. I didn't think I gave it a UN/PW. How do I find out what that is? Or better yet, how do I disable it? I think this is a separate issue from the one above but I'm not sure. I know next to nothing about networking so if someone could give me some pointers on how to fix these things in very plain, simple English, I'd really appreciate it. |

Do all of the computers have connectivity to the Internet? Is the only problem the Vista computer trying to access the HP computer? http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/background-information-useful-in.html http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/0...useful-in.html Is the Vista computer running Password Protected Sharing On or Off? http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2006/12/windows-xp-and-vista-on-lan-together.html http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2006/1...-together.html Look at logs from "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all", from the HP computer, the Vista computer, and one other computer, and diagnose the problem. Read this article, and linked articles, and follow instructions precisely (download browstat!): http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/troubleshooting-network-neighborhood.html#AskingForHelp http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/0...#AskingForHelp -- Cheers, Chuck, MS-MVP [Windows - Networking] http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/ Paranoia is not a problem, when it's a normal response from experience.
